Compared with running gears, plug connections generally have a smaller module and a greater tooth width. Measured characteristics are pitch, radial circular run-out, two-ball dimension and tooth trace. With tolerances of 20–50 µm, measurement-uncertainty requirements are in the medium range.
There are generally no special requirements for measuring time. Because spline tooth-profile accuracy directly affects backlash during torque transmission and mating fit, combining a rotary axis with tactile and optical sensors permits precise evaluation of tooth parameters across the entire circumference.
