A camshaft is defined by the shape of its cams, which determines the stroke motion of the follower. The most important geometric characteristics are the shape and position of the cam contour relative to the shaft axis, and the angle between cams. With tolerances from 5 µm to 20 µm, measurement-uncertainty requirements are high; measurement time is also considered, but has relatively lower priority.
Combining Werth rotary axes with a scanning probe enables precise acquisition of the cam lift curve at each axis angle, while optical sensors can also evaluate shape deviations on the cam surface.
