The teeth of ring gears and pinions are arranged on a plane or conical surface; the reference tooth profile and resulting tooth geometry vary with radius. The main geometric characteristics to measure are pitch, profile, flank shape and cone angle. With tolerances of about 5–20 µm, measurement-uncertainty requirements are high; measuring time is also considered but has relatively low priority.
Three-dimensional tooth-surface geometry that varies with radius can be evaluated precisely through multi-surface scanning with the Werth Multisensor System (WMS) and a rotary axis.
