Because bipolar plates have thin walls, they must be measured non-contact. The most important geometric characteristics are the profile of stamped and bent geometries, flatness, welding offset (the offset from cathode to anode), and the profile of the outer geometry. With tolerances of about 10–50 µm, measurement-uncertainty requirements are high, as are speed requirements.

Even if flatness tolerances are large, individual geometries must be measured with high precision in the same coordinate system. Since contact can deform thin sheet material, non-destructive measurement using 3D CT is suitable. Measuring both sides in one coordinate system makes it possible to reliably evaluate cathode–anode fit and welding offset.
